In the EMEA region, the role of the CIO is evolving. While economic conditions have put a new level of pressure on heads of IT, they remain optimistic about tech budgets and focused on driving business innovation. According to the 2023 State of the CIO study, 85% of EMEA CIOs view themselves as a changemaker, increasingly leading business and tech initiatives. They anticipate working more closely with a variety of groups this year, specifically executive-level administration, operations, finance, and risk management/compliance.

CIOs continue to strive towards a business strategist role, and plan to spend their time focusing on strengthening IT and business collaboration. This year, we see environmental, social, and governance (ESG) starting to have a marginal impact on the EMEA CIO role and IT buying plans. These IT leaders are being tasked to adhere to ESG standards and play a role in selecting clean information technology.
